Be Salty…
Ever try talking with your team and feel like your talking to a bunch of children?
Communicating with your team should be like communicating with your kids...
I found I had the best results when I did these 3 things:
1) Communicate early,
2) Communicate often,
3) Communicate with kindness
1. If I don't communicate early, by the time I'm talking, I'm already frustrated and frankly ready to pull the plug on whatever I'm involved in. “You’re done shopping if you’ve already checked out.”
2. If I don't communicate often, I run the risk of miscommunication. (as a dad & husband, I NATURALLY EXCEL at this!)
When I communicate often, I open up opportunities for recalibration and correction.
Most of the time, self-correction on the team's part happens automatically when they realize there was a disconnect between what I shared and what they're doing.
3. Man, this one can be tough at times for me when I’m focused on the end result/goal (which isn't a bad thing).
When we don't communicate kindly and we use a little too much "authority" we run the risk of losing that precious quality in a team...ENGAGEMENT. Don't run the risk of disengaging your team by “talking tough” all the time to them.
I'm reminded of a Bible verse, Colossians 4:6
"Let your speech be full of grace, seasoned as it were, with salt so that you may know how you should respond to each person"
WOW!
Anyone else feel they need to be a little more "salty" to their team? (you can put your hand up, I won’t peek)
Have fun being the salt that flavors the meat...
Oh, by the way, the salt (your speech) is just a seasoning.
The MEAT is your team’s ACTIONS!
